Built to make my life easier, and it does. Now it can make your life easier as well

I built this app having lived with Type 1 diabetes for 30 years

Hi, I initially built iSpike to help me count carbs. It wasn't until I'd built it that I realised it had become more than a carb counter, it had become the diabetes friend I'd always wished I'd had.

My story

I was diagnosed at 29 years old, unusual. My first thought was probably like yours, 'this isn't good, how am I going to manage'. My second thought was, how bad can it be? 30 years later I have an answer for that, and it's not the one I expected.

The hard part of Type 1 isn't the needles. It's the maths. Every meal, every walk, every gym session, every glass of wine — a calculation.

I tried guessing, I tried counting every gram of carbohydrate, by reading labels or searching the Internet, and again guessing. It just felt difficult, as if life wasn't difficult enough.

So in a world of modern technology, I started building iSpike for myself. Just a tool to take a photo of dinner and get a sensible carb number back. But quickly, as I added features, it morphed into the feature packed diabetes friend I now have.

A few Type 1 friends asked if they could try it. Then a few of theirs. So here it is.

Here's what I've built

Real screenshots. Every feature you'll use from day one.

iSpike dashboard

Your day at a glance

The dashboard gives you everything you need in one scroll: today's meals, carbs, exercise, your latest blood glucose reading with an in-range indicator, and a live CGM widget if you've connected a FreeStyle Libre sensor.

iSpike meal analysis

Snap a photo, get your carbs

Point your camera at any meal. iSpike uses AI to identify the food and estimate the carbs — fast and accurate. Then use the built-in calculator with your personal ratios to work out your dose yourself. Or enter your food by manual description.

iSpike action cards
iSpike comfort foods and recent meals

Quick actions & Comfort Foods

Enter food manually, search a food database, log exercise, get AI insights, manage your sensitivity profiles, or dive into trends — all one tap away. Plus a Comfort Foods bank so your regular meals are always to hand with an "Eat Again" button to log them instantly.

iSpike meal history

A complete meal history

Every meal logged, tagged by type — breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack — with the carbs right there. Tap any entry to see the full breakdown, edit it, or add more food.

iSpike trends blood glucose
iSpike trends charts

Trends that actually teach you something

See your blood glucose, carbs and meals plotted over 7, 14 or 30 days. An estimated HbA1c based on your post-meal readings. A breakdown of meals by type. The patterns you never noticed start jumping out. Tap "Analyse My Data" and the AI reviews your logged meals, exercise and blood glucose results, then gives you personalised advice on how you might adjust your routine.

iSpike settings ratios
iSpike settings target BG

Your ratios, your way

Set your insulin-to-carb ratio (ICR), insulin sensitivity factor (ISF), target blood glucose and blood glucose unit. The built-in calculator uses these when you choose to work out a dose — personalised to you, not a textbook average. Your sensitivity profiles adapt as you refine them over time.

iSpike FreeStyle Libre settings

FreeStyle Libre CGM integration

Connect your FreeStyle Libre CGM sensor for live blood glucose readings synced straight into iSpike. Tap the CGM widget on your dashboard to see an interactive glucose graph with 6h, 12h, 24h and 48h views, time-in-range stats, and your post-meal BG history with AI meal reviews. When it's clinic day, generate a PDF report to share with your care team.

iSpike learns from your meals

It learns how food affects you

iSpike remembers how a particular meal affected your blood glucose last time you ate it. Next time you log the same food, it shows you similar meals from your history — what you ate, how many carbs, and what happened to your BG afterwards. Tap any logged meal with a post-meal reading and get an AI-powered review explaining what happened and what it learned. The more you use it, the smarter it gets.

iSpike T1D tips and strategies

T1D tips they never taught you

25 practical Type 1 diabetes strategies that most people discover by accident — or never at all. Split dosing, pre-bolusing, fat & protein effects, the dawn phenomenon, alcohol risks, sick day rules, travelling with insulin, eating out, caffeine, injection site rotation, overnight lows, weather effects, adrenaline spikes, carb counting accuracy, menstrual cycle impacts, diabetes burnout, the honeymoon phase, basal testing, rebound highs, and more.
