iSpike is not a medical device. It only performs a calculation, based on the numbers given to you by your healthcare professionals and the standard practice of carb counting and insulin-to-carb ratio (ICR). Check all numbers, including the carbohydrate estimate, before making your own decision about how much insulin to take.
1. What iSpike is
iSpike is a logbook and auto calculator for people with Type 1 diabetes who already count carbs and already know their own insulin settings. It saves you doing the same sum in your head at every meal. It is not a doctor, a nurse, or a medical device, and it does not replace advice from your diabetes team.
2. How the calculation works
The insulin estimate is the standard carb-counting sum, worked out from the numbers you enter in Settings:
- Food: your meal's carbs divided by your own carb ratio (for example 60 g at 1 unit per 10 g = 6 units).
- Correction: if your blood glucose is above your own target, it adds extra based on how much 1 unit lowers your glucose (your correction factor). If you are below target, it takes some off.
- Insulin still active: an estimate of insulin left over from recent doses you have logged, based on the insulin type and duration you choose.
iSpike does not choose your ratios, correction factor or target. They are yours, normally agreed with your diabetes team. If they are wrong, the result will be wrong.
3. Where the numbers come from
- Carbs are estimated by AI from your photo or description. They are an estimate and can be wrong, especially for mixed dishes, sauces and portion sizes. Always check them against packaging or your own knowledge and change them if needed.
- Blood glucose may come from your sensor (FreeStyle Libre or Dexcom) or from what you type. Sensor readings can lag behind a finger-prick test and can be delayed or missing.
- Insulin still active is only an estimate. It only knows about doses you have logged in iSpike.
4. Your responsibility
- Check every result manually before relying on it.
- The decision about how much insulin to take, and when, is always yours.
- Think about anything the app does not know: exercise, illness, alcohol, stress, missed doses, or doses you have not logged.
- Do not use the calculator if you do not know your own carb ratio, correction factor and target, or if you are unsure how to carb count. Ask your diabetes team first.
- Keep your settings up to date whenever your diabetes team changes them.
5. What iSpike does not do
- It does not give medical advice or diagnose anything.
- It does not decide your dose for you or deliver insulin.
- It is not an emergency service. If you have a severe hypo, ketones or feel unwell, follow your sick-day rules and contact your diabetes team, NHS 111 or 999.
6. Accepting these terms
Before using iSpike you are asked to tick "I accept the terms of using this app". Each time the calculator shows a result, you are also asked to confirm "I agree to check my numbers manually, before relying on this calculation". By using iSpike you agree to these terms.
